Other Activities

    GAMES
On Wednesdays, we were asked to be at YJ at 2pm to bond with the children there to form a relationship of trust and to study their strengths and weaknesses in order to configure a rough plan that will help them increase their self-esteem and confidence levels. We bond with the children by playing the various games they have such as with PS4, table tennis, foosball table (our personal favourite), music corner and also the many many board and card games.

    INDOOR TRAINING (TOTAL FIT)

Once a month, they have a specific value they want to practice/teach the teens who are part of the Thursdays training. For that month, it was called “staying connected” whereby they taught us the importance of creating meaningful connections with everyone you meet in life, even a simple greeting and well wishes will do, check in on family and friends, etc. After that moral lesson, the invited coach who owns the Total Fit gym gave us a workout plan that involved squats and burpees. It was enjoyable due to the energy, enthusiasm and motivation provided by the children.

    BAKING

Since our FE, Nicholas Goh had other matters to attend to at HQ, he assigned us to another faculty member that coincidentally shared the same name, Nicholas Perera. He had allowed us to conduct a baking class with the children, where we made chocolate chip cookies. We had tried our best to divide the roles, such as melting the butter, rationing the chocolate chips etc, to every child that had participated. Some of the children were more interested in eating the cookies rather than helping out, whereas some of them were keen to be involved in the preparation. This activity helped us to observe the children in a more individualistic manner rather than following a collective approach.

    BUMBLEBEE

On the 15th of February (our last session), we attended the ‘Bumblebee’ science-themed programme at Flat Danau Kota, Setapak. Here, the kids were introduced to fun science experiments to gauge their interest in the field. There were many stations set-up to intrigue the kids and we were in charge of the table that produced a simple chemical reaction involving vinegar and baking soda which produced carbon dioxide. Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions, we were not able to showcase the experiment fully. However, they were more than interested to be actively involved with the other stations pronouncing this session a success. After the science session, the children were allowed to play with board games and read books out in the open.
